Labor/Delivery/Recovery/Postpartum care will all take place in the same room. Mothers check in to this room, give birth, and stay in this room until they go home. There are 15 LDRP rooms, two of which are barrier-free.
Two C-Section rooms are available in the unit. Mothers who have had C-Sections will stay postpartum in either an LDRP or in the Women's Health Unit.
The overall focus of the West Bloomfield Birthing Center is family-friendly. Dad, a relative or a friend can stay overnight. Babies room with their mothers 24/7, unless they require care in the Newborn Special Care Unit. Families can begin bonding at the hospital.
Most LDRP bathrooms will have optional hydrotherapy tubs to ease labor.
Rooms have special sinks for baby's first bath, and for new parents to learn how to bathe their babies.
The nearby eight-bed Newborn Special Care Unit provides a peaceful and dimly lit transition for premature and high risk infants. Staffed by board-certified neonatologists and neonatal nurse practitioners, rooms are private, with a sofa bed for a parent to spend the night.
Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital has the only physician who is board-certified in both obstetrics/gynecology and reproductive genetics in Southeast Michigan.
The unit includes an infant procedure room and a well-baby nursery.
A specialized anesthesiology team provides 24-hour epidural services.
Certified nurse midwives provide birthing options.
Lactation consultant services and specially trained nurses support breastfeeding.
Infants will wear special security monitors that will sound alarms if they approach the doors of the unit.
